He studied art at the Kyoto School of Fine Arts, then worked at the Kanegafuchi Spinning Company as a textile designer. It was in Kyoto where Tanaka became involved in the Atelier-za theatrical study group, and for the rest of his life, he would continue to love Noh theatre and express its beauty and wonder in his work.
